Abstract

This article looks at online Internet chatting as a means to resolve simulation tasks in lieu of face-to-face negotiation. It is suggested here that online chatting extends linguistic opportunities for participation in small-group settings in a much more egalitarian manner, while retaining the interactive qualities of spoken conversation. The conclusion is that language learners who are normally reluctant to speak in groups readily participate online. Furthermore, it appears that using online synchronous communication to resolve simulation tasks is viewed positively by language learners, which may in turn stimulate further attempts at language production.
