Abstract

Medical treatment protocols such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgical intervention are not sufficient in the treatment of oncology patients. Treatment of oncological diseases should be carried out by a multidisciplinary team of oncologists, nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, who address the patient and their problems in a physical, mental and social way. The role and responsibility of the social worker in the field of oncology within the multidisciplinary team is to participate in team work on holistic treatment, research and psychoeducation as a member of the medical treatment and psychosocial support team. The social worker has duties and responsibilities for oncology patients and their families, the institution, the community, teamwork and collaboration, reporting and documentation, professional development and training. While the social worker performs psychosocial interventions such as individual and family counseling and support groups for the patient and his family, also, they supports the solution of the patient's psychosocial and economic problems, and re-implements the patients' social functionality. This article, prepared as a review, aims to inform the reader about the psychosocial problems faced by oncology patients, the holistic approach in oncological treatment and the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork, and the roles and responsibilities of social workers within the multidisciplinary team.
