Abstract

The aluminium-free form of ferrierite has been crystallized from aqueous silica solutions in the presence of ethylenediamine and boric acid as templates. Using a single crystal with unit cell dimensions, a o = 18.557(6) A ̊ , b o = 13.889(3) A ̊ and c o = 7.249(9) A ̊ , the structure has been refined in space group Immm to a reliability factor R w = 0.106. The [5 4] fundamental polyhedra form 2-dimensional ensembles which are connected through additional oxygen atoms to give a 3-dimensional 4-connected framework. A mechanism for crystal growth has been suggested from the relationship between the crystal structure and the observed crystal morphology. Single crystal X-ray studies, chemical analysis and thermal analytical data suggest that the unit cell content is 36SiO 2. 2(H 2NCH 2CH 2NH 2). 2.5(H 3BO 3). 4H 2O with boron as non framework constituent. On heating ferrierite up to 900°C the guest species are driven out while the silica framework is retained.
