Abstract

SummaryAmong the numerical weather prediction models proposed, the Yi‐he global spectral model (YHGSM) developed by the National University of Defense Technology provides two two‐sided communication schemes that perform parallel computing for the semi‐Lagrange convection. One is the maximum wind scheme, and the other is the on‐demand communication scheme. Although the latter can greatly reduce the communication volume, it needs to determine the communication pattern and interact with adjacent processes every time step, resulting in a limited performance improvement. This paper proposes an improved one‐sided optimization scheme that avoids the overhead caused by the determination of the communication structures. An experimental study demonstrates that the proposed one‐sided on‐demand scheme reduces the communication volume by more than 0.035% and the total number of communication operations by more than a half compared to the original two‐sided on‐demand scheme.
