Abstract

The reaction of silver(I) nitrate with the propargyl alcohols HC CCRR′OH (R = R′ = H, Me and R = Me, R′ = Et) in the presence of Et 3N and bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) affords the trinuclear silver clusters [Ag 3(μ 3-η 1-C CCRR′OH)(μ-dppm) 3](NO 3) 2 in high yields. The complexes were fully characterised by spectroscopic techniques, and, in the case of rac-[Ag 3{μ 3-η 1-C CC(Et)(Me)OH}(μ 2- O-NO 3)(μ-dppm) 3]NO 3 · CH 2Cl 2 by single crystal X-ray diffraction. This high-yielding one-pot self-assembly process represents a safe and simple method for the assembly of trinuclear silver(I) acetylide clusters from simple, commercially available reagents.
