Abstract

The inelastic scattering of neutral atoms has proved to be a valuable tool for the study of surface phonon spectra and of the dynamics of the gas-surface interaction [1]. The time of flight spectra of scattered He atoms have yielded dispersion relations of surface phonons over the entire two-dimensional Brillouin zone (BZ) for several ionic crystal surfaces [2]. Recently this technique has been successfully applied to the study of noble metal surfaces [3].
