Introduction

Surgical site infections (SSI) are the commonest type of healthcare-associated infections in patients undergoing surgery, with higher overall cost and prolonged duration of hospital stay, they are largely preventable [1]. The definition criteria for SSI were proposed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to standardize data collection for the National electronic data Surveillance system (NEDSS). An infection control team with 2 full-time nurses was maintained in our hospital. The team acts as an advisory body to the medical staff, analyzing the epidemiology of the infections, improving the appropriate use of antimicrobials and providing adequate training for healthcare workers.
