Abstract

Abstract This chapter covers Schuman's genealogy, the derivation of his first and middle names, and the change in spelling of his last name. The lives of his paternal great-grandparents, both sets of grandparents, and his parents are covered, with emphasis on Schuman's German Jewish ancestry. The service of Samuel Schuhmann, Bill's father, in the Spanish-American War is mentioned as well as Sam's colorful past. Schuman grew up around relatives who were committed to their professional lives and noncommittal to their religious lives, and their priorities are reflected in Schuman's later life choices. Schuman's association with Manhattan is established in this chapter.
