Abstract

Surgical nursing experience in the surgical division is of utmost importance to a student nurse. The objectives of nursing are better illustrated in the surgical area than in any other area of the hospital. A nurse who has experience in the operating room is able to adapt easily and adequately in other wards. In the OR a student nurse learns to develop judgment, patient care, good human relations, organization, aseptic technique, interest in work and emotional stability. She also learns the scientific basis for surgery, interdepartmental and intradepartmental relationships, communication, and how to respond in emergencies. The nurse’s success lies in her understanding of human nature. In her career she meets different types of people. She should be able to respond to them in the way that is appropriate to the situation. This experience helps her by putting her in emergency situations where she must respond and develop the skill of achieving good interpersonal relationships.
