Abstract
Solid solution strengthening is a highly effective approach for enhancing the surface strength of Mg alloys. However, the realization of solid solution of Al in Mg remains a significant obstacle. Thus, a novel environmentally friendly technique for continuous electron beam bombardment is proposed to break through this bottleneck. The results revealed that a significant quantity of Al dissolved into the α-Mg phase, forming a reticulated supersaturated solid solution. Furthermore, the supersaturated α-Mg serves as an effective barrier and promotes notable microstructural refinement benefited from its enriched grain boundaries, contributing to a remarkable enhancement in their corrosion performance, an order of magnitude decrease. Additionally, AZ91D wear was reduced from 1.0 mg to 0.5 mg. Modified Mg alloy exhibited a noteworthy decrease of 50 % in wear when compared to its initial condition. This study provided insight into the development of efficient modification of Mg alloys by electron beam scanning.
