Abstract

This research examines how seniors make choices in their use of leisure time and how that information can assist community program planners. The study draws on data gathered through interview and observation of leisure as it occurred naturally among older adults. A desire for successful aging and intergenerational contact emerged from the data as did a description of features wanted in a senior environment. Knowledge of leisure and social pursuits unique to members of their local community can guide a senior center staff as they shape programs to attract and serve a broader spectrum of the retirement population.
