Abstract

While the economy is on a downslide, HAND is definitely on the upswing with the greatest fervor. I am proud to say HAND is going to be jettisoned into the next decade with two new bursts of good news. First, Michael Neumeister, MD has been appointed Associate Editor of HAND and will succeed me as Editor-in-Chief in January 2010. Dr. Neumeister is the Professor and Chair of Plastic Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He has embraced this responsibility wholeheartedly and is enthusiastic about the future of HAND. Secondly, HAND is now included in PubMed Central. PubMed Central (PMC) is a free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature at the U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH), developed and managed by NIH’s National Center for Biotechnology information (NCBI) in the National Library of Medicine (NLM). PubMed is searchable through the National Library of Medicine website. HAND content is searchable on PubMed immediately upon “Online First” publication, the e-version of the article prior to the hard copy print. All HAND content dating back to Volume 1, Issue 1 is searchable on PubMed in abstract form. HAND full-text content in PMC is available dating back to Volume 1, Issue 1. Full-text articles will be available on PMC 1 year after the article has been published in the print journal. Inclusion of HAND in PMC means: HAND articles fulfill NIH-funded article guidelines regarding Open Access. Springer will take care of the immediate deposit in PubMed Central of the final published manuscript and the articles will be available with a 12-month embargo, conforming to NIH guidelines. Thanks to Brian Adams, Mark Baratz, and Kevin Chung, who are rotating off as Editorial Board members, for their work and support of HAND. Welcome new Editorial Board members Peter Amadio, M. Felix Freshwater, Eric Hofmeister, Jonathan Isaacs, Ryu Jaiyoung, Ryosuke Kakinoki, and Jeffrey Yao. The great advancement of PubMed inclusion allows all HAND publications to reach a wider audience so that HAND articles are cited and referenced more than ever. Another dramatic effect of being searchable on PubMed is that the overall impact of HAND will improve. As our impact rises, a greater stream of extremely high quality manuscripts will be submitted and published catapulting HAND into the forefront of upper extremity journals. Indeed our future looks very promising. My advice to all of you, submit early, and avoid the rush!
