Abstract

I recently witnessed the following exchange during an evening Parent Teacher Organization meeting. In addition to all the teachers in the school, probably over two hundred parents were in attendance. During the large-group question-and-answer session, one of the parents said, “I have heard about some standards prepared by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and was wondering what our school is doing in response to them.” Without hesitation the principal said, “Yes, we know about the Standards and we did them last fall.”
