Abstract

During the past year American education in general, and mathematics education in particular. came under attack to an extent not matched since 1957 when Sputnik led Americans to wonder if their chools somehow were inadequate. Critical reports directed “to the American people” were issued with such frequency that satirist Alex Heard ofrered readers of the New Republic advice on “How to Write an Education Report.” Heard emphaized the prospective critic's need not for facts or policy recommendations but rather for strong metaphors and a strident style. Unfortunately, too many educational critics seemed to have taken Heard' tonguein-cheek advice seriouly!
