Abstract

• This study examines the effect of Israel’s main urban renewal policy (TAMA 38) on urban diversity. • Sporadic renewal can have a cumulative impact and wreak substantial change (1 + 1+1 = a lot). • TAMA 38 has promoted social and housing diversity in the examined area. • Diversity in the wake of TAMA 38 may be short-lived and is likely to be replaced by segregation. • The findings highlight the importance of a local perspective in urban renewal plans.
