Abstract

Summary Dogs are understood as companions who add value to the lives of their “owners,” and many people see them as important members of the family. Outside the home, though, there are often restrictions on where dogs can be – and how they can be if they are allowed. Dogs frequently accompany their people in leisure spaces, such as parks, trails, and vacations, yet they are often constrained in one way or another. The following fictionalized case study explores the limits imposed on dogs in leisure and pushes us to think why certain restrictions are necessary, as well as how they diminish the leisure experience of both humans and dogs.
