Abstract

In the first paper, the one loop divergence structure of $F(R)$ gravity theories is computed by integrating out fluctuations of the metric about an arbitrary metric background, yielding novel background independent results. In the second paper, these results are employed to rigorously demonstrate the exact equality of the one loop on shell divergences of $F(R)$ and scalar-tensor theories of gravity, thereby advancing the proof of equivalence of the two.
