Abstract
NHS hospitals in England are paying up to £2000 a shift for a locum doctor, with 16% spending more than £1000 a shift for locum cover, an investigation by the Telegraph has found.1 Based on freedom of information requests completed by 99 of the 164 hospital trusts in England, spending by NHS hospital trusts in England on agency locums is estimated to have reached £2.06bn during 2010-13.
