Abstract
When Trends in Microbiology was launched eight years ago, the expressed aim of the journal was to publish selected articles that explored aspects of the biology of viral, bacterial, fungal and protozoal pathogens, and their interactions with the environment. Our hope was to open a channel of communication between scientists with strikingly different research approaches and backgrounds. The success of this endeavour is reflected in the fact that Trends in Microbiology is now the highest-ranked monthly review journal in the disciplines that it covers.One hundred issues on, our monthly brief remains the same: to capture the immense excitement of microbiology and being a microbiologist.
