Abstract

In an introductory abstract algebra course, the emphasis is on developing abstract properties of groups, not on finding applications of group theory. Therefore, students are generally unaware of the wide application of groups to other areas of mathematics and science. Here we provide the student with an introduction to a variety of concrete uses of groups. In order to provide a link between the examples, we concentrate on just one group, the four element Klein 4‐group. Instances of this group are given inside other mathematical areas as well as in molecular classification in chemistry and in coding theory in computer science. This paper could be used as a one‐hour lecture in an introductory abstract algebra class: no subject is dealt with in detail but references are given for further study.
