Abstract

Unusual luminescence properties below 80 K are reported for Pd{sup II}(phbpy)Cl (phbpy = 6-phenyl-2,2{prime}-bipyridine). Interpretation of the luminescent data indicated that the nature of the luminescent state is triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer as in Ru(bpy){sup 2+}{sub 3}. The luminescence spectrum is shown to be dependent on the wavelength of excitation, and the decay rate of the excited species increased considerably between 5 and 41 K. 11 refs., 3 figs.
