Abstract
A mechanical analog for a one-dimensional harmonic lattice with periodic boundary conditions is presented. The system is appropriate for use as a lecture demonstration to illustrate the lattice dynamical concepts of normal modes, wave numbers, dispersion relations, band gaps, and localized impurity modes. The normal modes are dramatic, clearly observable, and qualitatively and quantitatively accurate.
