Abstract

A one-dimensional thermocline model is proposed to predict the formation and destruction processes of thermal stratification in enclosed coastal seas. Special attention is paid to the evaluation of vertical eddy diffusivity, which depends on the vertical profiles of wind-driven velocity as well as the temperature structure. The velocity profile is yield based on the profile of Ekman type and the surface velocity theoretically developed by Webber. The present model is found to simulate temperature fluctuations observed at Etajima Bay in summer.
