Abstract

That we are building a dramatic literature in this country is becoming increasingly apparent and those who are part of this growth - and I’m speaking right now of both David French and James Reaney - can take great pride in their work. I very much enjoyed reading One Crack Out and The St. Nicholas Hotel. French’s is a well-structured, naturalistic drama with an effective narrative thrust and Reaney’s is an extraordinarily moving piece of dramatic poetry. But certainly one test of an effective dramatic literature is that the works can be produced effectively on our stages and frankly , I have my doubts about both these scripts.
