Abstract

To obtain the 'best' one body potentials for use in an independent particle theory of the resistivity of metals it is assumed that for a given configuration of ions and time dependent external potential acting on the true interacting system, the resulting time dependent electron density can be obtained as the density of a system of noninteracting fermions acted upon by a time dependent effective potential. The effective ionic potentials so obtained are shown to be those which give the ground state electron density, when the external fields are switched off, as the density of a system of noninteracting fermions. By using these ionic potentials in the Ziman formula exchange, correlation effects are included beyond the usual linear screening approximation.
