Abstract
One Black American Family Tells Its Story gives a holistic perspective on how one family's values and history, kin and social network, and their student children constructed and resisted, confronted, and negotiated with the Shaker school authorities to generate the students’ high achievement. The Atchisons vividly reflected what they had in common with the other families as they experienced and proactively interfaced with the racialized social and academic system and environment.
