Abstract
Aleksander Johanson Elango is unquestionably the founder of systematic research on the development of pedagogical thought in Estonia. His own works and those of his students provide a good, general picture of the development of pedagogical ideas, beginning with the so-called national, or folk, pedagogy and ending with the period of bourgeois Estonia. Elango's works contain some general appraisals concerning the Soviet period too.
