Abstract

The focus of this paper is on the theoretical implications of fairy tales as well as the meaning and importance of fairy tales on the emotional development of the child. Fairy tales have immense psychological meaning for children of all ages. They talk to children, they guide and assist children in coming to grips with real life issues. Adults wishing to make contact with a child have to do so through the means of play ‐‐ in the realm of imagination. In a shared story a child and an adult can contribute what each does best, the child's ability to move from the concrete world to the created one, adults ability to shift in terms of their life experience. Emphasis will be placed on parents perceptions of fairy tales which is gleaned from questionnaires sent to parents of nursery school children in Grahamstown.
