Abstract

In 1997, I was invited to talk about writing and tenure at a student-sponsored workshop for doctoral students in planning. After that talk, several audience members asked me to publish it in a forum, like JPER, that would be fairly accessible to their doctoral colleagues. I received a similar response when I showed it to other doctoral students. After more deliberation than it probably needed, I decided to go through the process of getting it in wider circulation. While it is not a scholarly research or education article that belongs the main text, this Comment is intended as an accessible starting point for thinking and talking about issues of writing, scholarly communication, and tenure practicalities. At least some doctoral students and new faculty seem to have a great need for such an article. It is in that spirit that I offer it.1
