Abstract

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the phenomenon of women's chastity was unusually prominent in the region of Huizhou. The chaste woman could be identified with four basic categories: the chaste widow, the chaste virgin, the martyred widow, and the martyred virgin. Many factors affected the chastity behaviors of Huizhou women in the Ming and Qing dynasties, with varying effects on the chaste virgin, martyred virgin, chaste widow, and martyred widow. In reality, women selected various chastity behaviors by weighing the honor of martyrdom against family responsibilities.
