Abstract

The last time I planned a 75th anniversary celebration, it was easy. It was my dad's 75th birthday and since he was a lifelong professional musician, I planned a gala luncheon for 150 family members and friends on the theme of Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique in five parts. The event was a huge success. Now, my challenge is harder. This magazine—where I began my professional career nearly 30 years ago as a young chemist-cum-chemistry journalist—has reached its 75th year of existence. Chemical & Engineering News began life on Jan. 10, 1923, as the News Edition of the journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry . This longevity makes us, in publishing parlance, a mature product. But here at our headquarters in Washington, D.C., and at our six news bureaus around the globe, we think of ourselves more like the new kid on the block, reinventing the magazine each week to keep it accurate, timely, lively, and concise.
