Abstract

Whispering gallery mode resonators have the essential property to trap photons by total internal reflection. When manufactured with ultra-low loss crystals, they can feature an exceptionally high quality factor. The confinement of long-lifetime photons in the bulk resonator enhances nonlinear light-matter interactions such as Brillouin, Raman, and Kerr scattering. In this communication, we investigate the fundamental properties these interactions and highlight some applications in microwave photonics and nonlinear optics.
