On Thinking about History as Social Psychology

Abstract

Several theoretical problems in social psychology have been resilient to correction or resolution as illustrated in the case of sex-role research. This article proposes that these problems require modifications in our metatheoretical bases. Although alternative metatheories have been postulated by numerous social psychologists, the development of methodology and of viable research programs remains. It is suggested that historiography may inform the social psychologist on these matters.
