Abstract

Critical current (Ic) through weak and strong links between grains in Bi2223/Ag tapes was monitored following the process of thermomechanical heat treatment. It was found that strong links were mainly formed in the sintering stages where most of the tape was converted into Bi2223 phase. At early sintering stages, the formation rate for strong links was higher than that for weak links. Mechanical deformation at early sintering stages was very effective in enhancing the formation of strong links. However, excessive deformation after Bi2223 phase was fully formed had detrimental effect on the formation of strong links.
