Abstract
From the observed bulk modulus-volume relationship in ionic solids with the rocksalt structure, an equation is obtained for the variation of the Born repulsive parameter from one crystal to another. This equation is found to be in good agreement with the available data for alkali halides. Furthermore, it is pointed out that using the bulk modulus ratio of two classes of solids, in order to estimate the effective ionic valences, is speculative.
