Abstract

The Wagner hypothesis has been widely accepted in the buckling analysis of thin-walled members. Recently, the validity of Wagner hypothesis has been questioned by Ojalvo based on the theorem of minimum potential energy following the method used by Bleich. Since then, efforts have been made by several investigators to settle the dispute on the validity of Wagner hypothesis, but no general agreement has yet been reached. The purpose of this paper is to show more clearly the validity of Wagner hypothesis using the same method as adopted by Ojalvo. In this way, we show the difference between the two formulations and point out more precisely why Ojalvo's theories are incorrect.
