Abstract

Gamma-ray scanning is a widely used technique for the non-destructive analysis of nuclear waste drums. This work proposes the use of a spectral index as an additional tool for data analysis. Under appropriate circumstances, it can be useful to assess the homogeneity of waste drums, to localize hot spots and to determine their counting efficiency. Experimental data for open geometry and segmented scanning systems are presented. No additional hardware is needed, as only gamma-ray spectra are needed.
