Abstract

Over the last decade, SAR (synthetic aperture radar) imagery of the oceans has been available both from the Seasat satellite, in 1978, and SIR-B (Shuttle Imaging Radar) mission, in 1984. Through both theoretical work and the comparison of SAR wave imagery and independent measvres of the ocean surface, there appears to be an emerging consensus on the dominant mechanisms by which SARs image waves. Sometimes overlooked, but also of importance in interpretation of SAR wave imagery is the role of speckle or fading noise in the SAR image. In this paper, we discuss the effect of speckle noise on a SAR image spectrum and the necessity for accounting for speckle noise in calibrating ocean wave height-variance spectra derived from SAR imagery.
