Abstract

The understanding of ecological concepts by children of pre‐school age has been investigated. This is an essential element for the formation of an attitude favourable to ecology. Problems connected with ecological protection, both concerning nature and concerning society, are integrated into the Kindergarten Educational Program. The understanding of ecological concepts is however a complicated dynamic process. One of the methods for investigating it is a vocabulary test, and this was set to 54 6‐year‐old children. They explained what they understood of: environmental protection, atmospheric pollution, waste, noise, nature reservation. It turned out that the concepts which are best understood by children are those which they associate with every‐day experience, and descriptive definitions predominated amongst the answers. The factors with greatest influence on understanding of the concepts were the length of the children's stay in the kindergarten and the environment in which they lived. Appropriate conclusions are drawn concerning the organisation of the educational process in the kindergarten to encourage the formation of desirable attitudes, favourable to ecology. *Translated by David Williamson.
