Abstract
An estimate has been made of the trident cross-section for electrons of energy between 1 and 10 GeV. Energy determinations were made by scattering measurements on each track under conditions where the effects of spurious scattering have been shown to be negligible. In a total track length of 219 cm, the estimated number of true tridents was found to be 3, as compared with 2.4 expected from theory. Even on the basis of this small number of events, there is a marked discrepancy between our results and those of previous experiments at high energies. Eeasons for this discrepancy are discussed.
