Abstract

A representative value of the decay parameter of the statistical law, which describes the time distribution of the aftershocks in a region, can be reliably determined by considering all the complete sets of aftershocks of the region as one sequence. By this procedure a value equal to 1.13, with 1.08 and 1.18, 95% confidence intervals, has been found for this parameter in the area of Greece. By a similar procedure, it has been found that the time distribution of the foreshocks in this area follows a statistical law, of the form υ(t)=υ1(τ0−t)−h. The determined representative value of the parameterh is equal to 1.34, with 1.08 and 1.60, 95% confidence intervals, and the value of τ0 has been found equal to 20 days.
