Abstract

Thermoluminescence, the light emitted by previously irradiated materials during the heating, has been used in dosimetry, in archaeological and geological dating. In this paper we present thermoluminescent characteristics of two varieties of Brazilian topaz: colourless and light blue topaz. The glow curves and the dose response were determined for both samples. In particular, for the colourless sample we applied the initial rise method and the T m × T stop method to evaluate the activation energies of the thermoluminescent peaks and to characterise the kinetics of charge carrier detrapping mechanism. We also studied the effects of UV illumination and temperature of annealing on the glow curves.
