Abstract

The propagation of transverse wave-beam interaction in fast-wave structure in the presence of a finite magnetostatic field is investigated in this study. The wave-beam equation is derived for the case of a non relativistic beam. The difficulties expected in the solution of the coupled equation were overcome by the transformation to the electron beam coordinates. The non-relativistic assumption should be made with due caution in order to preserve the internal consistency of the linearized interaction theory. The propagation constant, along the waveguide axis, was found to be either real or imaginary if the space of interaction is lossless. This constant becomes complex as soon as the plasma collisions become significant.
