Abstract
It is demonstrated within the framework of a phenomenological continuum model that reliable conditions for zero thermal expansion of polycrystalline and amorphous ferromagnets cannot be obtained by considering only the electronic properties of the single structural units. The random orientation of these units and the elastic coupling effects between them play an essential role for the calculation of the macroscopic effective expansion tensor.
