Abstract

A theory for the line width and steady-state behavior of an external cavity laser is presented. The theory, valid for arbitrarily strong feedback, is a generalization of existing theories which neglect multiple reflections. The line-width reduction is analyzed taking into account both the phase condition and threshold change for the feedback induced modes. The stable tuning range for the phase in the external cavity is calculated.
