Abstract

Some methodological and theoretical issues concerning the measurement of laterality are discussed. A distinction is made between direction and degree of laterality. Theoretical rather than statistical arguments can decide whether laterality should be measured on a nominal or a higher level. An increasing number of experimental studies suggest that laterality can be best considered as a continuous phenomenon.
