Abstract

Optical absorption spectra of Cu 2+ ions doped in ND 4 Cl(basic) and NH 4 Cl(acidic) crystals have been studied in the temperature range from 300 K to 173 K. An abrupt red shift of the position of the band maxima assigned to the transition 2 A 1 g → 2 E g is observed at 248 K in ND 4 Cl and at 241 K in NH 4 Cl crystals and this is attributed to the ordering of coordinated molecules ND 3 and H 2 O respectively. The results are compared with Cu 2+ :NH 4 Cl(basic) and Cu 2+ :NH 4 Br(acidic) crystals.
