Abstract

The physical and chemical properties of the tea soils of Sakabe, Haibara-cho, Shizuoka-ken were investigated. From the conditions of soil profile, these tea soils were classified as red-yellow soil and it was observed that the concreating gravel layer lay in the under layer (60-70cm. depth from the surface earth). The physical properties were generally inferior, especially the structure of sub-soil was compact and wet.The chemical properties were inferior too, and it was the most conspicuous character that the reaction of the tea soil was very strongly acidic, owing to the deficiency of exchangeable calcium. From these results, it was seemed that the growth of the tea plant in this area, was very seriously affected by the inferior physical and chemical properties.
