Abstract

Summary Leif O. Manger, ‘On the Study of Islam in Local Contexts’, Forum for Development Studies, No. 1, 1992, pp. 51–65. The article discusses various anthropological perspectives on ‘Local Islam’. The author presents major positions within the field as they have been argued in the writings of Ernest Gellner and Clifford Geertz. By bringing in new literature the author tries to show that these contributions suffer from an attempt to uncover the essence of Islam. It is argued that rather than depicting Muslim societies as mere reflections of basic characteristics of Islam, Muslims should be depicted as they think and speak about themselves. Studies on such discursive traditions and the production of social knowledge should be emphasised and the article presents empirical examples in order to elucidate this.
