Abstract

Al-5 to 20wt%Sn alloys were unidirectionally solidified in the horizontal direction. The Al-18.5wt%Sn alloy composed of a network type of Sn structure was, in addition, heavily cold-worked and annealed. When the Al-Sn alloys are solidified unidirectionally in the horizontal direction at steep temperature gradient and fast solidification rates, the network structure in which a Sn phase is uniformly distributed results in. When the Al-1.8wt%Sn alloy solidified under such a condition that the network Sn structure is formed is cold-worked at a high reduction ratio and is annealed, the Sn phase is refined. The optimum heat treating condition for refining and the behavior of the Sn phase in recrystallization are also discussed.
